All students who are required to pay tuition fees are conditionally admitted. This is because your admission is not confirmed until the payment of fees has been made. It is also possible to be conditionally admitted because you need to submit the final year transcript and diploma from your previous university studies.

No. This does not affect your chances of getting a scholarship from Mälardalen University or the Swedish Institute. This does not affect your chances of getting a residence permit.

It is actually not possible to do this. The condition can be removed “locally” by the university, but this is not updated in your University Admissions account. The reason for this is that the IT system for processing your application, and the IT system for processing your fee payment at the university are two separate systems. So your status in University Admissions will always be listed as “conditionally admitted” which is fine.

This depends upon where you want to study. If you want to study at Mälardalen University, then you are admitted and can just follow our instructions to prepare for coming here. If you want to study at the other university then please contact them to find out what your chances are of being admitted at a later date and how their process works for applicants on the reserve list for the specific programme to which you applied.

You do not need to reject your reserve offer in order to stay admitted to Mälardalen University.

Yes, you can. Please note that the last day to apply for deferment is 3 weeks after the start of the semester. The regulations around deferment are strict and set by Swedish law. If you don’t have a valid (according to the regulations) reason for deferment, another option may be to re-apply next year. If you re-apply, you do not need to resend the documents which you have previously submitted to University Admissions.

The tuition fee for the first semester of your programme is listed on your Notification of Selection Results, as well as at the programme specific information on the Mälardalen University website. It is also listed on the invoice you as a fee-paying student receive through email.

The easiest way to pay your tuition fee to Mälardalen University is by card, but you can also use bank transfer or other payment method depending on the country you will be sending the tuition fee payment from. You can find more information on our tuition fee page.

When you pay the tuition fees Mälardalen University notifies the Migration Board that your fees were paid. You can check the status of your payment in Ladok, and retrieve a receipt there, if you need one for your own records. You do not need to send any proof of payment to the Migration Board, they only accept the University’s confirmation. In fact, it may delay your residence permit process if you submit documents that are not requested by the Migration Agency.

You should pay the tuition fees as soon as possible as payment of the fees is necessary for applying for a residence permit. While it is technically possible to begin applying for a residence permit before the fees have been paid, you should only do this if you are 100% sure that the fees will be paid within 1 week of submitting the online residence permit application.

It is fine to wait to pay the tuition fees until after you receive a decision from the Swedish Institute or other scholarship that you have applied for. The scholarship notifications from Mälardalen University are sent no later than 22 March.

The latest date to pay the fee is 3 May but we STRONGLY advise you to pay earlier than this. In some instances, it is possible to pay the fee after this date but the risk is that you will not get your residence permit in time.

No, you must pay the first semester tuition fee in full. If the fee is not paid in full you will not be able to get a residence permit to come to live and study in Sweden.

In most cases this will not be a problem, as long as you don’t wait too long to apply for a residence permit after getting the scholarship decision. Keep in mind that the sooner you start the residence permit process the better.

You can apply for a refund using our refund application. Tuition fee refunds are subject to a 3 000 SEK administrative fee. The fee will be deducted from the amount refunded. Please note that due to bank procedures outside of the university’s control the process of getting your money back can take up to 2 months.

Please apply asap when you have paid your tuition fee and have the other necessary documents ready. The time from when you apply until you get your decision can be long, why there's no time to lose at the start.

You will find instructions on the website of the Swedish Migration Agency. A strong advise is to submit exactly what they ask for, no more and no less. By doing so you ensure a smoother process.

The sad answer is that usually we can't. However, we always try. Keep us (your contact person) posted if you have been waiting for more than 2 months.

If your application is declined you can choose to appeal. This is usually a very long process and we can almost say for certain that you will not be able to start your studies this year.

Not getting the decision in time can unfortunately happen, and it's very frustrating both for you as a student and for us at the university. As harsh as it may sound, if you are not able to be here at the latest 2 weeks after the start of the semester we kindly ask you to cancel your participation and apply for a refund using our refund application form. Residence permit issues are not a valid reason for deferment of studies.

You can apply for student housing through our collaboration partner Bostad Västerås once you have been admitted to MDU. As their process of sending out offers starts a bit later, we recommend that you search for accommodation through other channels too. We have listed some other options for you.

We understand that this would indeed be the ideal procedure. However, the housing situation in the area is tight, and by waiting you risk not getting a sustainable place to stay. There are occasionally more students than student apartments or rooms, although our collaboration partner do everything they can to set all students up with an accommodation.

The standard waiting time for an apartment in the regular house renting market is 3-4 months. Staying in a hotel for that long is quite costly...

Please check the refund policy for the accommodation provider and keep track of the key dates in order to minimise potential loss of money.

MDU does not have any apartments of our own, so to say. We collaborate with housing agencies but there is a general lack of large student apartments suitable for families. This makes it a bit more difficult for students with families to find accommodation.
