Course syllabus - Optimization of Products and Production Systems

Objectives

The objective of this course is to develop understanding and competence in using industry-standard methods for the optimization of products and production systems in the context of virtual production. 

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student should be able to: 
1. Describe the underlying principles of optimization theory.  
2. Classify optimization problems based on the case formulation.  
3. Evaluate the performance of products and production systems.  
4. Apply gained knowledge to solve product and production optimization problems.  
5. Demonstrate ability to communicate and critically assess the findings of optimization related to performance of products and production systems.

Course content

- Introduction to optimization methods  
- Model development using industrial software  
- Design space exploration and system evaluation 
- Bottleneck detection 
- Single- and multi-objective optimization of products and production systems 
- Analysis and post-processing of results 

Specific requirements

45 credits in Product and Process development, including at least 5 credits simulation and 15 credits in mathematics. In addition, Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3. 

Examination

Seminar (SEM1) 0.5 credits, examines learning outcomes 1-5, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) 
Individual Assignment (INL1), 2.5 credit, examines learning outcomes 1-4, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) 
Project (PRO1), 4.5 credits, examines learning outcomes 3-5, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) 

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
