Course syllabus - The Internationalisation Process of Companies

Objectives

The purpose of this course is to give understanding and knowledge on how companies internationalize and why they choose a specific way to do it. Another purpose is to practice group discussion, oral and written presentation.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to:  
 
Knowledge and understanding 
1. Describe what is meant by acting in foreign markets, theoretically and empirically understand the challenges that companies may face when they internationalize, with a particular focus on the internationalization process and cultural diversity.
2. Give an account of central scientific perspectives within the subject of international business.    
 
Skills and ability  
3. Describe and analyze opportunities and challenges that companies may encounter in their internationalization process.  
4. Theoretically describe and explain companies' internationalization processes. 
5. Demonstrate skills to, in cooperation with others, contribute to group discussions. 
6. Demonstrate skills in academic writing and good linguistic presentation.  
 
Ability to evaluate and approach 
7.Critically evaluate different types of concepts that can be linked to companies' internationalization processes.

Course content

The course deals with problems and opportunities that can be linked to companies' internationalization processes. The course deals with various reasons why companies want to become international and how they go about to become international. Entering one or more foreign markets usually requires different types of knowledge and/or resources than are required for domestic market operations. A common obstacle to a successful internationalization process is cultural differences between countries. The emphasis of the course is on the internationalization process and how companies can handle differences between different cultures.

Tuition

Teaching in the course is conducted with lectures, seminars and the students' own presentations (written and oral). The literature is based on scientific articles.

Specific requirements

22,5 credits in Business Administration. In addition English course 6 is required or equivalent.

Examination

Project (PRO1), 2,5 credits, grades Excellent (A), Very good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Sufficient (E), Insufficient, complementary work possible (Fx), Insufficient (F) To pass this examination, the student must write an article, prepare and carry out a presentation (learning outcomes 1-7)

Seminars (SEM1), 3 credits, grades Excellent (A), Very good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Sufficient (E), Insufficient, complementary work possible (Fx), Insufficient (F) To pass this examination, the student must actively participate in four seminars (learning outcomes 1-5)

Written reports (PRO2), 2 credits, grades Excellent (A), Very good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Sufficient (E), Insufficient, complementary work possible (Fx), Insufficient (F) To pass this examination, the student must submit a written assignment for each seminar, i.e. 4 assignments (learning outcomes 1-4, 6-7)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
