Course syllabus - Product Development in Global and Virtual Settings

Objectives

The course aims to, through a human centered design (HCD) perspective, give the students insights and knowledge about challenges and opportunities, as well as contribute with knowledge of various tools and methods that can be used as support in global and virtual product development.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student must be able to: 
1. reflect on opportunities and challenges with product development in global and virtual environments. 
2. justify appropriate tools and methods for product development in global and virtual environments. 
3. demonstrate the ability to plan and analyse the consequences of product development projects in global and virtual environments. 
4. demonstrate the ability to motivate and apply appropriate methods and tools for product development in global and virtual environments. 
5. demonstrate the ability to analyse the effect of the application of different methods and tools in global and virtual environments. 
6. demonstrate the ability to present in writing and orally in a virtual environment. 

Course content

The course includes work where students, individually and in groups, in an engineering-like approach perform a technical or theoretical product development task in a virtual and global environment.

Specific requirements

60 credits of completed courses in Product and Process Development whereof 22.5 credits must be at the lowest G2F level including Model Technology and Visualization 7,5 credits and Cad 7,5 credits at G1F level. In addition, Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3. 

Examination

Seminar (SEM1), 1 credit, is examined through a seminar regarding the course literature, examines the learning outcomes 1 and 2, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Assignment (INL1), 2.5 credits, is carried out individually and examined via the submission of a lab report, examines the learning outcomes 5, marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5
Project (PRO1), 4 credits, is a group assignment  and is examined via the submission of a project report and oral presentation as well as by opposing a project report written by another group, examines the learning outcomes 3, 4 and 6, marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
