Course syllabus - Process simulation

Objectives

The course will give deeper knowledge in the use of simulation within energy processes.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student shall be able to
1. understand the principles behind commercial simulation tools
2. select and use appropriate simulation tools for dynamic and steady-state simulations
3. build and implement models in simulation tools for different applications related to the energy area
4. validate simulation models towards real process data
5. use models for different applications such as process optimization, system design, decision support and production planning
6. analyse and critically review simulation results in relation to real process data
7. show knowledge within the research area of process simulation

Course content

The course covers principles in building simulation models in process engineering, use of different tools for dynamic simulation, chemical equilibrium calculations and energy and material balances for different type of problems, simulation solvers, including simultaneous and sequential solvers, model verification and validation.

Specific requirements

150 credits within an energy engineering program which includes 7,5 credits from each of the courses Applied Thermodynamics, Heat and Mass Transfer and Mechanics of Fluids, or similar and 22,5 credits in Mathematics/applied mathematics where at least 7,5 credits must be Single Variable Calculus.
In addition Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. In cases where the course is given in English, exemption from the Swedish B/Swedish 3 is given.

Examination

Assignment (INL1), 1.5 credits, grades Pass (G) (learning outcomes 1-7)
Assignment (INL2), 1.5 credits, grades Pass (G) (learning outcomes 1-7)
Assignment (INL3), 1.5 credits, grades Pass (G) (learning outcomes 1-7)
Home examination (HEM1), 3 credits, grades 3, 4 or 5 (learning outcomes 1, 2 and 5)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.

It is desirable to have knowledge from the courses Heat and Power Engineering 15 credits and Numerical Methods 7.5 hp.
The course overlaps 7,5 credits with ERA304 Process Simulation.
