Objectives

The purpose of the course is to enhance and deepen the students’ knowledge, understanding and skills within software development for time-critical systems. This includes preparing the students for software engineering thesis work that includes real-time aspects.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the students will be able to:
 
1. describe the basic principles of real-time scheduling and analysis of real-time systems
2. apply basic scheduling strategies and analysis methods when designing complex, reliable real-time systems
3. describe a typical development process for real-time software and what factors influence the choice of process
4. explain how real-time aspects affect and are handled in different software development activities, such as requirement definition, design, implementation and testing
5. formulate timing requirements and high-level design for a complex real-time system and motivate the solution
 

Course content

The main disciplines within software development for real-time systems such as scheduling and real-time analysis, handling timing requirements, and design, implementation and test of real-time software.

Specific requirements

At least 90 ECTS credits in computer science, including basic knowledge of software engineering 7.5 ECTS credits. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.

Examination

Written examination (TEN1), 4 credits, (examines the learning objectives 1-5), Marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5 
Written assignment (INL1), 2,5 credits, (examines the learning objectives 2 and 5), Marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) 
Seminar (SEM1), 1 credit, examines the learning objectives 2 and 5), Marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) 

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
