Objectives

The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the basic laws and methods of classical mechanics and to develop their skills in the application of these laws to specific mechanical problems. The course is also intended to give theoretical knowledge in formulating, applying and analysing mathematical models for physical situations. The course provides a basis for studies in other branches of physics and technical applications and gives an insight in the methods of scientific thinking.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student is expected to be able to
- define the fundamental concepts in classical mechanics and describe the relations between these concepts.
- reduce a system of forces with respect to an arbitrary point.
- formulate the conditions of equilibrium and use these conditions in problem solving.
- formulate the fundamental kinematic relations in particle dynamics and integrate these relations to analyze linear and non-linear particle motion.
- analyze the motion of a particle based on the forces acting on the particle.
- formulate and describe Newtons laws of motion, work-energy and impulse relations and use these relations to solve different problems in particle dynamics.
- display basic laboratory skills including being able to use some computer based system and analyze the data of measurements.

Course content

Fundamental quantities and units. Dimensional analysis. Statics. Systems of forces in two and three dimensions. Equilibrium. Kinematics and dynamics of particles. Newton's laws, linear and angular momentum. Work - energy relations. Conservation laws. A brief description of the motion of rigid bodies in two dimensions (rotation about a fixed axis). Harmonic motion.

Examination

TEN1, Examination, 5 credits, written examination concerning learning outcomes 1-4 and 6, grades Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5.
INL1, Assignment, 1 credit, written assignment concerning learning outcomes 1-4, 6 and 7, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
LAB1, Laboratory work, 1.5 credits, laboratory work concerning learning outcomes 3-5, grade Fail (U) or Pass (G).

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
