Course syllabus - Sustainable Energy Systems - Project

Objectives

The course gives deepened knowledge in an energy engineering question of current interest related to research and development. The course will give an understanding for and practical application of theories and models for analysis and planning of sustainable energy systems and will develop the individual ability of the student in: written and oral presentation, critical review of information, work in groups, planning and accomplishment of a task within a certain time limit.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student shall be able to:
- apply theories and models in solving energy engineering issues
- identify energy engineering issues and demands for further knowledge within the subject area
- integrate knowledge from different areas and handle complex information
- communicate and present conclusions and method, clearly and distinct
- analyse and critically evaluate an energy process and parts of an energy system
- make judgements of different strategic solutions for sustainable energy systems and their constraints and possibilities for development
- relate present research and development work to the investigated energy engineering issue
- co-operate in working groups to reach the common project goals

Course content

A larger project assignment, concerning an issue of current interest within the area of sustainable energy systems, accomplished in a working group. The assignment includes one or several of the following tasks: measurement/experiment and analysis of the results, calculation/simulation/optimization and analysis of the results, planning/dimensioning

Tuition

Lectures, project work, supervision.
The course uses a pedagogical (web-based) platform for communication, discussion and presentation of course material.

Specific requirements

180 credits within an energy engineering program whereof 65 credits within energy engineering including 7,5 credits from the course Heat and Power Technology or 7,5 credits from the course Introduction to sustainable energy systems. and 15 credits on advanced level whereof 10 credits energy engineering. In addition Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.

Examination

Seminar (SEM1), 2 credits, marks G
Project work (PRO1), 8 credits, marks 3,4 or 5

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.

Interim Regulations and Other Regulations

Compulsory supervisor meetings, project meetings and seminars are included in the examination SEM1. In the examination PRO1 both individual and group assignements are included.
Knowledge from the courses Process Simulation 7.5 credits and Process Modelling 7.5 credits is desirable.
