Course syllabus - Applied Thermodynamics

Objectives

The course aims to provide the fundamental knowledge about applied thermodynamics needed for further study in engineering programs. The course will cover the basic concept, laws, principles and important applications in processes for energy conversion.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to:
1. understand the first and second Law of thermodynamics
2. perform calculations for both closed and open systems regarding all types of thermodynamic processes
3. perform thermodynamic calculations for different cycles, such as Carnot cycle, Brayton cycle, Rankine cycle, the Otto and Diesel cycle and the refrigerating/heat pump cycle
4. perform thermodynamic calculations for gas mixtures including moist air
5. simplify a complex problem and apply knowledge of thermodynamics to solve the problem and to find the reasonable solution
6. model the energy balance and analyze the thermodynamic performance of energy systems
7. in collaboration with other study plans, execute laboratory activities and report results of experiments to illustrate the thermodynamic phenomena

Course content

First law of thermodynamics, state parameters, heat, work. Ideal gases, ideal gas equation of state, state changes.
Cycles, heat engine, refrigeration/heat pump. Carnot cycle. Second law of thermodynamics, entropy, isentropic efficiency. Exergy.
Cycle performance, gas turbine cycle (Brayton cycle), steam turbine cycle (Rankine cycle), Otto and diesel engine. Gas mixtures and psychrometry.

Lectures, calculation exercises and laboratory work.

Examination

Assignment (INL1), 1 credit, grade Pass (G)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
