Objectives

The course shall:
- Give a deeper knowledge of a mathematical subject
- Develop the ability to formulate a problem and to work independently
- Develop the ability to present knowledge and the results obtained in speech and writing.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to
- independently, in writing and orally, present the basics of the problem area and solution methodology and the results obtained in the completed project.
- Present all relevant literature and other sources used in the project and clearly and accurately refer to this information in the written report.
- If the project is applied conduct computer-based experimental studies with data, models, algorithms, and software, and present the results graphically and numerically in tables, as well as comment and draw conclusions from the results.

Course content

The larger part of this course is an independent study which shall be done individually or in groups. A supervisor is appointed to every student or group. The work shall be described in a written plan which shall be approved by the supervisor who is also the course examiner. The work shall be presented both in a written report and orally at a seminar. In addition to the independent work the course may contain literature searches, literature studies and seminars.

Specific requirements

Non-overlapping courses in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics with a total sum of at least 30 credits.

Examination

Exercise, (PRO1), 7.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
