Alumnus of the Year at Mälardalen University 2013 is Ling Zhang. This was announced by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Paul Pettersson at a ceremony at MDH in Västerås.

Unfortunately Ling Zhang could not attend the award ceremony because he is in China. But one of Zhang's friends, MDH student Jiale Zhou, accepted the award on his behalf and read a message from Ling Zhang.

In his greeting Mr. Zhang writes that “Studying at MDH opened my mind and widened my vision. I met lots of people with different backgrounds, which taught me to be myself, do what I love, do more meaningful things and give more contribution for the world.”

The motivation for the award reads:

"Ling Zhang, founder of the Swedish Alumni Network in China, is a fantastic asset to Mälardalen University (MDH). He has already done an enormous amount for MDH by promoting it within the network, and hence laid the ground for MDH students and staff to benefit from its numerous members."

Ling Zhang graduated from the Master's programme in intelligent embedded systems in 2009. After his studies at MDH, he returned to China in 2010 and founded the Swedish Alumni Network in China - SANC, an alumni network of over 750 members. SANC has contacts and collaborations, including with the Cabinet Office, the Swedish Institute, the Swedish Embassy and Consulate, Swedish Chamber of Commerce in China, various Swedish companies in China as well as colleges and universities.
