English Teachers Sharing - meeting with afternoon tea

You are welcome to a meeting of English Teachers Sharing, run by Mälardalens högskola.

Olcay Sert, Docent in English at Mälardalens högskola, will outline his research and findings from the field of Second Language Classroom Discourse. Olcay currently leads a project (Digi-REFLECT) involving local teachers, student-teachers, and digital tools to aid reflection and feedback practices.

After a keynote from Olcay, a choice of workshops will be available for teachers to attend.

Workshop 1: Using corpora in English language learning and teaching

A corpus is a great resource for language learners and teachers. In this workshop we will take a look at a few corpora that are freely available online to see how they can be used in the English language classroom. Hands-on activities will be included.

Workshop 2: Poetry and creative writing

This workshop will look at some of the ways poetry and creative writing can be used in English education. A report from the poetry slam work initiated by Rudbeck gymnasium in Västerås will be included.

English Teachers Sharing encourages bridge building between Higher Education and schools, for development of research and practice, and for quality teacher training and development. This afternoon offers the opportunity to share ideas, experiences and concerns about English teaching.

Keynote by Olcay Sert

Recent research in the field of (second) language education has emphasized the key role of teachers’ management of classroom interactions in creating opportunities for language learning.

One obvious way to better understand this link between classroom interaction and language learning is to review and reflect on actual teaching practices. To this end, our project, DIGI-Reflect, explores the use of a digital reflection tool with mentors and student-teachers in our partners schools in the region.

We investigate how our digital reflection framework is used to identify, review, and discuss aspects of English language classroom interaction. In this talk, I will present some of our preliminary findings and exemplify aspects of classroom interaction that promote learner engagement, creating opportunities for learning.

I will also illustrate how mentors, student-teachers, and university teachers work in collaboration to create evidence-based reflection and feedback practices that will contribute to teacher development. I will close the talk by providing recommendations for language teaching and Continuous Professional Development.
