Master's programme in Public Health within Health and Social Welfare
A Master's degree in the Public Health Sciences, within the field of health and welfare, will give you in-depth knowledge of how our everyday habits affect our health, as well as of preventive and health-promoting work. You will learn to follow the development of health as well as to identify the factors affecting our health. Sustainable development is a central and recurring theme of the programme.

You will acquire in-depth knowledge of how everyday habits and factors of equality affect our opportunities of developing sustainable health. You will also learn how preventive and health-promoting work contributes towards a sustainable state of health, and also develops a good understanding of what affects sustainable health. The programme will also give you an increased scientific approach, primarily by a deeper understanding of epidemiological processes, in which your descriptive, analytic and reflective skills will be developed.
You will study Public Health Sciences against the background of the broader area of health and welfare. Issues concerning equality and participation, professional knowledge and development as well as creativity and innovation are in focus. You will also develop your understanding of leadership, groups and organisations as well as evidence-based praxis and evaluation. The programme is given in English and you will read the courses in Health and Welfare together with students from other Master’s programmes and research studies. The programme runs for two years but may be completed after one year with a Master’s degree of 60 credits.
Future and jobs
A Master’s degree in Public Health Sciences, within the field of health and welfare, will make you well prepared to meet the growing complexity facing those today who are working professionally in health, both in the private and public sectors. The programme will prepare you well for public health work at the municipal, regional, national as well as the international levels. It will also give you a good foundation for studying at research level. A Master’s degree in the Public Health Sciences or the equivalent is often a requirement if you wish to work in larger organisations such as the WHO or Sida.

A completed bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to 180 credits within the fields of science of public health, psychology, caring science/ nursing science, physiotherapy, social work, sociology or equivalent. International students are required to submit a TOEFL test result, with a minimum score of 575 with a TWE score of at least 4.5 (PBT) or 90 with a TWE score of at least 20 (iBT) or an IELTS test result with an overall band score of at least 6.5 and no band score below 5.5 or equivalent.
