Cloud and the Industrial Internet of Things Initiative
Sweden has a long and successful tradition of building advanced technical systems in critical industrial sectors, e.g., transportation, automation, power systems, and telecom. To assist Swedish industries in staying competitive in the long run, and being at the forefront in evolving their products and systems, smarter and more efficient industrial automation is needed. The initiative will drive this effort using Internet-of-Things (IoT) and cloud technologies to leverage industrial systems that are more intelligent and for providing new industrial services. In the long run, these technologies will allow developing smarter and more efficient embedded systems that exploit the vast amounts of data and computing power available on the cloud to the benefit of society and their users.
Smart products, systems, and services as encapsulated by terms such as IoT, big data and cloud computing, are perceived to have the potential for a strong economic impact in the coming decades that will total a substantial part of the entire world economy. Consumer applications are prevalent today, rapidly being followed by applications in society and industry. Huge improvements are envisioned through increased autonomy and intelligence in complex industrial functions, like transportation (e.g., self-driving vehicles) or automation (e.g., collaborative robotics). This will be achieved by connecting products and systems to each other, and by linking them to decision making software powered by the scalable computing resources available in the cloud. This has an enormous potential to unlock new functionality and will fundamentally transform society through automated transport and production.
Consumer products and non-critical industrial systems and services such as remote maintenance are currently being made smarter through connecting local device computations with cloud computing resources for computation and availability of big data. This initiative will conduct key research needed to enable ubiquitous access to cloud services in real-time, making this technology available also to operations in industrial systems. The initiative will leverage new technologies essentially developed in the mobile industry, namely low power high capacity processors, low cost high bandwidth reliable communications, and very cost-efficient high capacity computation and availability of data in the cloud, combined with new research to make reliable cloud enabled industrial systems.
