Questions and answers
about the corona virus

Due to the coronavirus Covid-19. Here you will find answers to some of the most common questions for those planning to travel abroad in the autumn semester 2020.

Will I be able to conduct my planned exchange studies during the autumn semester 2020?

At this point, it´s impossible to assess the situation regarding the possibility of exchange studies this autumn. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs advises against travel to all countries until 15 June. It is also not certain that the university you have been nominated for can receive students this fall because of the ongoing situation. We therefore recommend that you apply for courses at MDH this autumn to have a backup plan.

When will I know if I can go abroad or not?

As long as the Ministry for Foreign Affairs advises against unnecessary travel, we will not be able to approve any stay abroad.

MDH will monitor the situation and take decisions in accordance with the authorities' recommendations as soon as possible.

Can I go ahead booking flight ticket, accommodation, etc?

Wait as long as possible to book tickets and other things that are connected to costs. If you book tickets, make sure the tickets are rebookable and refundable. The university has no insurance that covers expenses related to this.

Can I postpone my exchange studies to the spring semester 2021?

It might be possible. Contact the international coordinator at your school so he/she can contact the partner university to investigate if it´s possible.

Can I postpone my exchange studies to the next academic year (2021/2022)?

No. But you can apply for exchange studies for this period without being affected by having already been granted an exchange place.

Do I need to buy an insurance?

MDH provides all exchange students with insurance through Kammarkollegiet. The insurance covers emergency medical and dental care and includes personal property protection, liability cover interruption cover and more.

What does the insurance provided by Kammarkollegiet cover?

The insurance applies if you fall ill or suffer an accident. It covers, for example, emergency medical and dental care and home transport to Sweden if it becomes necessary. The insurance also applies if you are injured in extreme sports such as scuba diving, rock climbing and surfing. If you suffer a life-threatening injury, life-threatening illness or death, the insurance covers travel for two relatives who visit you.

The insurance includes a liability cover if you have to pay damages. For example, it may be a landlord who requires you to pay damages for an injury that has occurred in your accommodation during the time you study or practice abroad. The insurance also includes a legal protection if you claim someone else for damages.

The insurance also applies to your property. This means that you can seek compensation if your items are broken or stolen. The insurance covers damage and losses on private property up to 20.000 SEK.

The insurance does not cover regular checks or medications for illnesses that have occurred before the trip.

Read the terms and conditionsexternal link for the insurance to see what it covers and not:

Can I get compensation from Kammarkollegiet or MDH for costs such as air tickets, visas and accommodation if the exchange is cancelled?

No, the insurance does not cover these expenses.

If I cannot study abroad via MDH, can I arrange to study abroad on my own?

We recommend that you refrain from arranging studies abroad on your own. Students who study abroad on their own are not covered by the insurance from Kammarkollegiet.

If I can't study abroad, can I take my degree if it requires study abroad as a part of it?

Contact your study counselor to discuss your situation.

I no longer want to study abroad because of the current situation, what should I do?

Contact the international coordinator at your school and inform him/her that you wish to cancel your exchange studies.
