Automation Region Research Academy (ARRAY) is an industrial postgraduate school at MDH in a close collaboration with several of the world’s foremost companies in automation and robotics.

ARRAY contributes to increased competence and development in scientific areas that are of strategic relevance to Swedish industry.

ARRAY includes fourteen doctoral students.

The postgraduate school started in 2018 and is a unique collaboration project that came about thanks to a large commitment from a number of key people at MDH's industry partners. ABB, Volvo and Skanska have been driving and investing large resources.

The companies that are part of the postgraduate school are ABB Robotics, ABB Industrial Automation, ALTEN, Bombardier Transportation, First Control Systems, Kanthal, MITC, RISE SICS, Skanska Sweden and Volvo Construction Equipment. The collaboration also includes the Automation Region and the Robot Valley.

The five research tracks, Embedded systems design, Control and optimization, Safety and security, Test and verification and Applications of automation, are carefully selected to match the industry's wishes, strategic priorities and challenges.

Examples of projects in progress:

  • Industrial robotics in new (dynamic) environments.
  • Next generation control systems for process automation (including cyber security, testing and available and fault tolerant systems).
  • Construction automation, specifically how robotics and autonomous machines can replace heavy work in the construction industry.
  • Automation and electrification of heavy vehicles.
  • Digitization of heavy industry.
  • Robotics for quality assurance in production.
  • The introduction of collaborative robots in production.
  • The initiative also includes a wider range of postgraduate courses with guidance from both academia and industry.

ARRAY is a total investment of SEK 75 million, where the KK Foundation has granted MDH SEK 32 million. The remaining funding is distributed with approximately one third from the companies and two thirds from MDH.
