Teachers´use of matemathics curriculum resources in the 21:st century: a cross-cultural project

We aim to increase understanding of elementary mathematics teachers’ capacity to use curriculum resources well and the factors influencing it. Thoughtful use of curriculum resources is important given that these resources are widely used in schools around the world. Characteristic for the 21st century, the landscape of curriculum resources is rapidly shifting: the current technological revolution has dramatically altered the design of resources (from print to digital) and the way these are marketed and accessed by teachers. Little is known about the impact of these shifts on education since research is scarce. Further, research on the use of print curriculum resources mainly focused on the application during lesson enactment, whereas research on how teachers prepare for teaching with these resources is scarce.

The current project addresses both abovementioned gaps by studying teachers’ use of curriculum resources in cross-cultural settings. We opt for the cross-cultural perspective since teaching is a cultural activity, while research on curriculum use currently lacks this cross-cultural elaboration. This cross-cultural perspective will allow to identify cultural scripts that are hard to see from inside the culture. We will analyze elementary mathematics teachers’ interpretations and actual use of print and digital curriculum resources in Sweden, Flanders (Belgium), the United States, and Finland. Additionally, we will ask teachers to reflect on resources from other cultures.
