Auditors are important so that the economic system will function. But what really happens when newly-hired auditing employees at audit firms are fostered to become auditors? And why do so many newly recruited employees quit the profession after a couple of years? Researchers at Mälardalen University (MDH) are currently investigating this matter.

A sustainable private sector requires long-term, sound management of profit, loss and shareholder’s equity. This applies to both large and small limited liability companies. During the Corona pandemic, several large and small financial support packages have been launched by the Government to save jobs and businesses. Researchers at Mälardalen University (MDH) are currently studying how shareholders' management of equity in times of crisis has changed.

In future it will be possible for us to extract nutrients from our wastewater, to be used as fertiliser in agriculture for example. In an ongoing research project at Mälardalen University (MDH) this possibility is being explored, with a view simultaneously to create a circular society where we recycle both water and nutrients.

In the future, it will become increasingly important to take into account the relationship between water, energy and food in order to secure food supply, both in Sweden and globally. At Mälardalen University (MDH), research is underway to develop systems that make it easier to chart the weather to optimise water consumption when irrigating arable land and crops, by using climate data from SMHI (the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) and NASA.

According to researchers, the lack of clean water is a world-wide problem. Although we who live in Sweden view clean water as a matter of course, it is far from reality for everyone. At Mälardalen University (MDH), research is being conducted on how to purify water using effective methods, but there are also a lot of things you can do as a private individual to conserve one of the Earth's most important resources.

By 2050, it is envisaged that the population of Västerås will grow to 200 000 inhabitants. More residents and an expanded business sector will place higher demands on infrastructure as well as the electricity and transport systems. In order to speed up the transition to a climate-neutral transport system, more knowledge is needed about how the actors in electrification, power networks and users can collaborate. At Mälardalen University research in this field is currently being carried out.

Today, about 60 per cent of all the labour force works in offices, which is an environment often characterised by low physical activity. Many employers encourage their employees to exercise by subsidising active healthcare activities, but it is a benefit often used by those who already enjoy an active lifestyle in their spare time, as a way of getting a discount on their gym membership. Researchers at MDH are investigating how instead to use the workplace itself as an arena for encouraging good health.

Elderly men are over-represented in suicide statistics, but despite this they seldom seek help for mental ill-health. Researchers at MDH, together with Karolinska Institutet, have made a study on mental ill-health in elderly men and have concluded that nurses in primary care play a key role in identifying mental ill-health among elderly men. To prevent suicide requires close cooperation among professionals and with the patients’ relatives.

In 2025 about 250,000 tonnes of batteries from trains, cars and other electric vehicles will have reached the end of their lives. Today only a fifth of the battery’s full capacity is used, which has great impact on our environment since the batteries are not fully used. At MDH our researchers are investigating how the remaining capacity could be used by companies to prolong the life of the battery and thus reduce the environmental impact.
