The research concerns the design, operations and improvement of the processes for product and production development. A major part of the research performed within the Product and Production Development research group focuses on Design and Operations of the Production System where the product is realised. The production system comprises components such as premises, humans, machines, equipment and software/ICT implying the need for a holistic view when designing and operating the system.

Key themes within the group are:

  • Production Systems Development and Industrialisation. Processes, information and communication for innovation, development and improvement of flexible production systems, aligned with product development.
  • Sustainable product development and production. Methods and tools, organisation and processes to develop products with low environmental impact that contributes to economic benefit. System analysis and description models of economically, socially and environmentally sustainable production systems.
  • Digitalisation, automation and technologies. Exploitation and adoption of next-generation technologies in the production environment.

Ongoing research projects

The objective of the ARC project is to develop a set of flexible (i.e., online/blended) and modular courses on “Industrial Cybersecurity” (ICS) and "Augmented Reality for Industrial Systems" (ARIS), from introduction to advanced levels.

The project aims to improve manufacturing companies ability to manage and coordinate the digital transformation in factory networks by developing strategies and organizational structures that support and streamline the technology development. The overall goal is better utilization of new technologies and thus increased efficiency and industrial competitiveness.

The aim of this project is study the impact on the production system when products start being produced, fully or partly, of mixed material parts. Parts of mixed materials are generally more expensive than traditional steel parts. To justify the expensive parts, the products must be designed in a new way.

Main financing: Vinnova

The aim of PERFORMINGRAIL is to delineate through, formal modelling and optimal traffic management, a moving block railway signalling that mitigates potential hazards in the diverse market segments.

Project manager at MDH: Francesco Flammini

Main financing: European Union Horizon 2020 Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking

Recreate aims to develop knowledge on how to achieve efficient and economically feasible second life management solutions for EV batteries to improve the Swedish manufacturing industry' competitiveness.

Project manager at MDH: Koteshwar Chirumalla
