Energy efficiency and reduction of emissions

Resource efficiency includes utilizing bioenergy sources and at the same time enabling recovery of other resources, as for example nutrients and sustainable cities built in an ecologic, economic, and social sustainable way. Another important area is investigating possible process integration for both increased flexibility and resource efficiency.

MDH is also working out new solutions which can make possible a larger share of renewable energy, such as flexibility (demand-response, demand-side management, energy storage as well as solutions for linking together different energy carriers such as electricity to heat and power-to-x).

Focuses areas

  • Smart buildings with production and storage of electricity and heat.
  • Smart network systems.
  • New price mechanisms.
  • Detailed (energy) measurement and added values for new services, for example for efficient energy.

Ongoing research projects

With this project MDH and partners will develop a computational tool that will predict the heat transfer by boiling in a system.

Project manager at MDH: Rebei Bel Fdhila

Main financing: KK-stiftelsen

This project proposes a new route for the design and operation of data centers.

Project manager at MDH: Jinyue Yan

Main financing: STINT

The aim of this project is to carry out a feasibility study of how agrivoltaic systems, that are the combination of farm activities and solar parks, can increase the energy efficiency and economic viability of PV systems in Sweden.

Project manager at MDH: Pietro Campana

Main financing: Swedish Energy Agency

Syftet med projektet är att maximera synergier i big data, ny teknik och innovativ marknadsdesign för högre grad av flexibilitet i energisystem.

Project manager at MDH: Jinyue Yan

Main financing: Stiftelsen för kunskaps- och kompetensutveckling (KK-stiftelsen)

The purpose of the project is to identify areas of research that is of interest for future study and connects to the economy of biogas plants.

Project manager at MDH: Eva Nordlander

Main financing: Mälarenergi, Eskilstuna Energi och Miljö, Vafab Miljö

The corporate graduate school Future-Proof Cities has a focus on sustainable urban development, and builds on a community dialogue about challenges for Swedish medium-sized towns – a community dialogue in which academia, in collaboration with the private sector and community planning, plays a central part in implementing solutions for sustainable development.

Project manager at MDH: Eva Thorin

Main financing: The Knowledge Foundation

This project takes a system perspective on possible collaboration between variable electricity production and storage options in connection to district heating production. The main purpose is to utilize excess heat that arises during energy conversion for storage.

Project manager at MDH: Bengt Stridh

Main financing: Energimyndigheten

The goal of the IEA PVPS program is to promote international cooperation and thus facilitate solar cell technology to play a larger and significant role in the transition to sustainable energy systems.

Project manager at MDH: Bengt Stridh

Main financing: Swedish Energy Agency

Projektets allmänna mål är att göra Power-to-gas-teknologin till en livskraftig lösning för långvarig lagring.

Project manager at MDH: Konstantinos Kyprianidis

Main financing: ERA-NET (Energimyndigheten)

Together we focus on a common commitment to improve energy production, distribution and use of energy.

Project manager at MDH: Hailong Li

Main financing: KK-stiftelsen

Project manager at MDH: Eva Thorin

Main financing: Svenskt Vatten, Mälarenergi, Eskilstuna energi och miljö

The project will consider the potential contributions of negative emission technologies (NETs) to limiting the global temperature increase to well below 2°C or 1.5°C.

Project manager at MDH: Jinyue Yan

Main financing: Swedish Energy Agency

The project strives for research and development of technologies for optimal management of treated water resources.

Project manager at MDH: Eva Thorin

Main financing: Formas

Recreate aims to develop knowledge on how to achieve efficient and economically feasible second life management solutions for EV batteries to improve the Swedish manufacturing industry' competitiveness.

Project manager at MDH: Koteshwar Chirumalla

Main financing: Knowledge Foundation

SMART will look at the integration of physics-based models of district heating network, with real-time AI-based load prediction and model-predictive control. The project will include models of next generation attached and detached single- and multi-family solar buildings to be connected to the regional heat and power distribution system.
