Children and young people at school and in society
The research of the BUSS profile starts out from a holistic perspective on ways in which children and young people with experiences from different social contexts function in their roles as preschool children or school pupils and relate to the world of school and preschool which involves demands and expectations.
The researchers study ways in which preschool and school offer pedagogical challenges to children with different abilities and experiences. Current research is focused on children’s encounters with the language, reading and writing process, mathematics, aesthetic subjects, sustainable development, participation and learning, and the role of social interaction processes and attempts to define an identity. Another effort highlights children’s playing and learning in preschool, preschool class and school, and the intersection of professions and practices.
The research at BUSS is characterized by interdisciplinary work and methodological breadth. It is dominated by a research tradition which stays close to practice. National and international cooperation is crucial for the researchers in BUSS. There is also an important ambition to engage in extensive cooperation and coproduction with local and regional partners.
Over the last few years, the BUSS research group has been successful in terms of applying for funding for research projects, and has among other things participated in seven research projects funded by the Swedish Research Council, several of which took place at Mälardalen University. This has enabled the members of the group to do highly qualified research and publish it both nationally and internationally to a relatively great extent.
Since 2011, the Early Childhood Education Group and the Special Needs Education Group have cooperated with research seminars and seminars for doctoral students as part of the BUSS framework. Many of the Swedish Research Council projects also straddle the traditional boundaries.
