Specific requirements

A completed Bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to 180 credits, within the fields of Technology/Engineering/ Economics/Business/Science, of which at least 15 credits in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics. Nonengineering graduates are required to have at least one year of working experience in industry. A TOEFL test result, with a minimum score of 575 with a TWE score of at least 4.5 (PBT) or 90 with a TWE score of at least 20 (iBT) or an IELTS test result with an overall band score of at least 6.5 and no band score below 5.5 or equivalent is required.

About programme syllabus

The programme syllabus applies to the entire education period, starting with the academic year and the semester you started your education. The programme syllabus contains goals for the programme, contents and arrangement, but also requirements for special qualifications, etc.

Outcomes

The aim of the study programme is:

  • to meet the need on the labour market of graduates at Master’s level with the knowledge the programme gives,
  • to give internationally useable and sought-after knowledge of  production and logistics, and project management seen in a holistic perspective,
  • to give students continued and improved opportunities for research in the field of product and process development and other applicable subject areas, and also
  • to reinforce this research, by means of its links to different existing and expected research projects in the research group in the subject area of product and process development, and to give students the opportunity of direct experience of participating in this and other research activities.

The objectives of the programme specified below are based on the Higher Education Ordinance, Annex 2 (SFS 2006:1053).

Knowledge and Understanding

On completion of the degree programme the student shall:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in modern production and logistics, including wide knowledge of product and process development as well as considerably specialised knowledge,
  • demonstrate in-depth insight into current research and development work with a focus on tools and processes for efficient production and logistics, which are sustainable in a life cycle perspective, and also
  • demonstrate specialised methodological knowledge of production and logistics.

Aptitudes and Accomplishments

On completion of the degree programme the student shall:

  • demonstrate the ability, critically and systematically, to integrate knowledge and to analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, problems and situations even with limited information,
  • demonstrate the ability, critically, independently and creatively, to identify and formulate problems, and also to plan and carry out, using adequate methods, advanced assignments within given timeframes, thereby contributing to the development of knowledge and also to evaluate this work,
  • demonstrate the ability, in national as well as international contexts, to clearly account for and discuss, orally and in writing, the conclusions arrived at and the knowledge and arguments that form the basis of these in direct dialogue with companies, the community and other groups and/or in seminars or conferences, and also
  • demonstrate such skills as are required to participate in research and development work or to work independently in some other advanced activity in industry or in the public sector.

Ability to Evaluate and Assess

On completion of the degree programme the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability, in Product and Process Development, to make assessments with regard to sustainable development and relevant scientific, societal and ethical aspects, and also demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work,
  • demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of science in Product and Process Development, its role in society and the responsibility of human beings for how this is used, and also
  • demonstrate the ability to identify his/her need of further knowledge and be able to take responsibility for his/her own knowledge development.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction is English, which includes all teaching, examination and literature, etc.

Contents

The Master's Programme in Product and Process Development - Production and Logistics is a two-year technical programme in product and process development. The first year focuses on scientific theory in the research field, competitive production systems, operations research, production and logistics planning, maintenance and supply management. The second year focuses on production system development and is concluded with a degree project.

The programme gives in-depth knowledge of processes and methods for product development within the subject area of Product and Process Development, and gives the necessary qualifications for research programmes. In the programme are included distinct elements concerning entrepreneurship, creativity, scientific method, personal development and internationalisation.

Teaching consists primarily of lessons, projects, seminars, self-study and supervision. Courses are mainly given on campus. Projects are common and in several courses projects are offered in direct cooperation with companies. In addition to this the student is expected to set aside time for self-study and group assignments outside of scheduled times.  

Frequently occurring forms of examination are written assignments, oral presentations, seminars and written examinations. Written assignments consist primarily of reports, calculations or physical representations but can for example also consist of video-based product presentations. Examinations are often written and carried out in examination rooms, sometimes with computer aid.

Examination elements are carried out individually or in groups. Training in cooperation within and between groups and with the surrounding community is seen as an important part of the programme at the same time as individual performance is also in focus. The programme is concluded with a degree project, which is carried out individually or in cooperation with a fellow student.

Before the programme begins, the student shall make an individual study plan, based on the programme syllabus and with regard taken to his/her prior knowledge, for the entire period of study. The student will receive support and guidance in this work. The choice of courses can affect the possibilities of fulfilling the degree requirements.
