Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide the student basic knowledge and understanding of different stationary signals and how these can be processed to emphasize preferred characteristics.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student shall be able to: 

1. know different signal types and linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. 
2. know the theory behind Fourier-, Laplace-, Z-transforms (and its inverse), convolution and the sampling theorem,
3. be able to practically implement above theories in MATLAB for basic signal analysis,
4. identify and apply appropriate signal processing technique to study continuous- and discrete-time signals and LTI-systems in the time and frequency domain and critically evaluate the obtained results, 
5. identify and apply appropriate LTI-system for filtering of different signals and critically evaluate their effect on the signal in both the time and frequency domain (both in continuous- and in discrete-time).

Course content

Continuous- and discrete-time signals, convolution, frequency analysis/synthesis, Fourier series, Fourier transform, Laplace transform, Z-transform, sampling, continuous- and discrete-time LTI systems, filtering, FIR- and IIR-filter, signal analysis in MATLAB.

Specific requirements

7.5 credits Programming, 7.5 credits Single Variable Calculus and 3 credits Measurement technology or similar.

Examination

Take-home examination (HEM1), 4.5 credits, examines the learning outcomes 1-4, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G). 
Project (PRO1), An assignment that is presented with a report and a demonstration of the project, 3 credits, examines the learning objectives 3, 4 and 5, marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
