Objectives

The course aims to provide knowledge on how different methods can be applied to optimize production systems.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. Describe the underlying principles of optimization theory. 
2. Classify optimization problems based on the case formulation. 
3. Evaluate the performance of production systems. 
4. Develop skills of utilizing state-of-the-art discrete event simulation software. 
5. Apply gained knowledge to solve real-world production optimization problems. 
6. Demonstrate ability to communicate and critically assess the findings of optimization related to performance of production systems.

Course content

The course content is divided into four modules: 
* Introduction to Optimization Theory 
* Evaluation of Production Systems 
* Bottleneck Analysis of Production Systems 
* Multi-object Optimization of Production Systems

Specific requirements

40 credits in engineering/technology and 2 years of work experience in full-time from relevant area within industry. 
In addition, Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.

Examination

Individual Assignment (INL1), on optimization theory and classification, 0,5 credit, examines learning outcomes 1 and 2, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Exercises (OVN1), on simulation and optimization of production systems, 1,5 credits, examines learning outcomes 3 - 5, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Group Assignment (GRU1), on the optimization of a real-world production system using software, 3 credits, examines learning outcomes 3 - 6, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
