Course syllabus - Circular economy and environmental engineering

Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge about the concept of circular economy in the context of environmental engineering. The main focus is on different parts of the waste management system and the evaluation of their environmental impacts using the methodological framework of life cycle assessment.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student shall be able to:
1. Explain the concept of circular economy
2. Discuss circular economy and its limitations in the context of environmental engineering
3. Compare and motivate different methods for the assessment of resource efficiency, sustainability and environmental impact
4. Evaluate environmental impact of practical examples from the waste management system such as anaerobic digestion of organic waste streams

Course content

The course addresses the concept of circular economy, its use and limitations in the field of environmental engineering, methods for the assessment of resource efficiency, sustainability and environmental impact and practical examples related to waste management.

Specific requirements

120 credits of which 90 credits engineering and/or natural science and 7,5 credits mathematics. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.

Examination

Assignment (INL1): 1 credit, grades: 3, 4, 5 (Learning outcomes 3, 4)
Digital examination (HEM1): 1 credit, grades: 3, 4, 5 (Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4)
Seminar (SEM1): 0,5 credits, grade Passed (G) (Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
