Entry requirements for applying for courses and programmes

To be able to be admitted to higher education courses and programmes you need to have certain prior knowledge, called general entry requirements. For some courses and programmes there are also specific entry requirements. The entry requirements that apply to each programme can be found on the programme pages.

Conditionally admitted

If you do not fulfil the entry requirements when you apply for a course or programme, but have the prerequisites for qualifying before the course or programme starts, you can then be conditionally admitted. Being conditionally admitted could for example apply if you are registered for a prerequisite course but lack the final school grades.

You apply for the course as usual through universityadmissions.se. There you will receive information if you are:

• a qualified applicant
• conditionally qualified
• an unqualified applicant

If you are conditionally admitted to a course it means that after selection you will have more time to become a fully qualified applicant before the course starts. If, despite the extra time, you don’t become a qualified applicant for the course, there is an opportunity to test whether you can be granted exemption from the conditions.

If you have a registration for a prerequisite course/courses from three semesters previously, you will be assessed, before the selection process, as ”conditionally qualified”, which after selection can give the status of ”conditionally admitted”.

If you have no registration at all for a prerequisite course/courses, or if the registration is older than three semesters previously, and no activity in the course can be traced, you will be assessed, before the selection process, as ”an unqualified applicant”, which in the selection will give the result ”Deleted”.

In short:

Pay attention to the specific entry requirements for the course you have applied for, and keep a check on the information on your pages at universityadmissions.se after your application.

Qualified applicant → Admitted/placed on waiting list
Conditionally qualified → Conditionally admitted/placed on waiting list
Unqualified applicant → Deleted

Being conditionally admitted to a course means that after selection you will have more time to become a fully qualified applicant before the course starts. Then the condition can be removed and you can be registered on the course and take part in it.

If, despite the extra time, you don’t become a qualified applicant for the course, there is an opportunity to test whether you can be granted exemption from the conditions.

The completed form is to be submitted to the Student Centre at studenttorget@mdu.se, alternatively in the appropriate School’s letter box outside the Student Centre before the start of the course. If you are uncertain as to how long before the start of the course you have to submit your application for exemption, you are welcome to contact the School through the Student Centre’s email at studenttorget@mdu.se. The School will take a decision as to whether the application can be granted or rejected.

Special regulations for courses with placement

The time aspect is particularly important for courses including practical elements, so therefore special regulations for courses with placement, VFU, apply.

• HVV: You must be a qualified applicant no later than the Friday 3 weeks (24 days) before the start of the course to be able to start a placement course on the Nursing programmes.
• UKK: You must be a qualified applicant no later than 6 weeks (42 days) before the start of the course to be able to start a placement course on the Teacher Education programmes.

Prior learning

If you lack the entry requirements for higher education but consider that you have the knowledge required, you may apply to have an assessment of what is known as prior learning. These prior skills, that is to say your amassed knowledge and qualifications, you may have acquired for example from working life, voluntary associations, lengthy stays abroad, staff training courses or other courses.

General entry requirements

If you wholly or partly lack the general entry requirements, SUHF (the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions) has produced a general model for assessing general entry requirements. To fulfil the general entry requirements you need to have a grade of at least E or a pass grade in:

• Swedish/Swedish as a Second Language A + B or Swedish/Swedish as a Second Language 1, 2 and 3
• English A or English 5 and 6
• Mathematics A or Mathematics 1a, b or c
• Social Studies A or Social Studies 1b, alternatively Social Studies 1a1+1a2.
• Additionally three years’ professional experience of at least half time after the age of 19 years.

If you have this knowledge you are considered to fulfil the general entry requirements and therefore do not need to apply for assessment of prior learning. Bear in mind that you may still need to apply for prior learning for specific entry requirements.

How is your prior learning assessed?

On the basis of the documents and papers you enclose with your application, the University will make an assessment of your ability to complete your studies. Therefore it is important that you send in as much information and documentation as possible.

Do the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test

Becoming a qualified applicant does not mean that you have priority to the course(s) you have applied for. If there are more applicants for a course or programme than there are places, you will have to compete for a place with the help of a merit rating. If you are applying for a course or programme at the Bachelor’s level, we recommend that you do the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test to get a merit rating.

Assignments

You can describe your ability to study at higher education level by doing assignments. These assignments may help you to prove that you have the skills required within an area where formal merits are lacking. You need to do assignments only for the entry requirements for which you are lacking the formal qualifications.
