Master's programme in Health and Social Welfare, 120 credits

The Programme

This master’s programme will prepare you for a challenging and successful career in the health and welfare sector. As a student you will acquire a profound knowledge with focus on multidisciplinary research field in health and social welfare. In this multidisciplinary field of knowledge several different professions from different subjects interact. Studies at master level in the field of Health and Welfare has both a health and a social welfare perspective, which is reflected in the composition of courses and theses.

This programme offers several orientations to choose from which will lead to the degree of Master of Science 120 credits in Caring Science with Specialization in Nursing Physiotherapy with specialization in Behaviour medicine, Public Health Science, Social Work or in Work Life Studies.

Programme Overview

You will study individually, discuss the course content in seminars and also work in groups with other students. You will develop your ability to exchange, critically approach and appraise knowledge and research at a scientific level. After your graduation (Master Degree 120 credits) you are qualified to apply for doctoral studies. The programme is organized on a two-year basis with the possibility to terminate after one year obtaining a one-year master degree. The programme, which is on a full-time schedule, is accessible for both foreign and Swedish students.
Studies in qualitative and quantitative methods will enhance your ability to comprehend and make use of research results.

Orientations

The profile of this Master’s Programme is in the field of Health and Welfare. You will develop an understanding of management, teams and organizations, evidence based practice and evaluation. The aim is for you to gain a broad understanding of the evolution and the challenges for the health and welfare sector in times of globalisation. Some courses are mandatory and are studied together with the doctoral students studying at post-graduate level in the field of Health and Welfare.

In addition to the mandatory courses you choose courses within your preferred topic in one of the orientations of the programme. You choose one of these orientations once you have started the programme:
• Caring Science with Specialization in Nursing
• Physiotherapy
• Public Health Sciences 
• Social Work
• Work Life Studies

The objectives of the courses in research designs and methods as well as of the independent thesis are for you to gain further and in-depth knowledge of research designs and methods and their applications in health and welfare. As a student you choose your orientation which indicates in-depth subject study and subject for the thesis. For the award of a master degree you must complete a degree project for at least 30 credits or two such projects at least 15 credits each within one of the orientations.

The knowledge acquired through this programme will improve your current or forthcoming work in the growing international health and welfare sector. A profound knowledge of this sector will also be a key component in all future careers involving the promotion of health and well-being – nationally and internationally.
