Study programme in Embedded Systems

About 99 percent of all computers today are embedded – they are found in cell phones, game consoles, digital cameras, cars, airplanes, medical equipment, home appliances, robots, etcetera. These systems are getting more and more intelligent to meet the specific needs of their users. Intelligent embedded systems belong to the future – do you want to learn how to design and implement them?

EDUCATION

We offer a top-quality education in intelligent embedded systems, with world-known expert teachers, industrial student projects and internships, scholarships to study abroad, and a double-degree possibility with Technical University of Eindhoven, a top-ranked research university. Course units feature state-of-the-art theory and practice in the fields of embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and robotics. The practical part is organized as applied projects on real industrial equipment with some of the industrial partners, for example ABB and Ericsson. Industrial partners are actively involved in the education and they provide quality assurance and industrial relevance of the programme. The programme offers also the possibility to study parts of it abroad at our partner universities, for example Technical University of Eindhoven (double master degree issued) and East China University, Shanghai (student scholarships available). Please visit the link Example student projects in the menu for more details about student projects.

The study programme is based on AN INTERNATIONALLY AWARDED MASTER PROGRAMME

In 2008, the programme was awarded a national grant for excellence by the Knowledge Foundation. In 2009, it received the international “Bayer Teaching Excellence Award”, which is given to top engineering educational programmes around the world. Moreover, one of the students won the prestigious “Bengt Asker Award” for the best embedded systems master thesis in Sweden. Another student won the second prize at the in the national championship of robotics in 2011, and a student got nominated for Swedish Embedded Award 2011, as one of only 6 students in Sweden. Several teachers have been awarded best-teacher awards.

COLLABORATION WITH THE INDUSTRY

The programme has originally been co-designed together with seven regional industrial partners: Prevas, CC Systems, Motion Control, Hök Instruments, EEPAB, Automation Region, and RealTest. Today, the programme has extended its industrial network with, for example, international giants such as ABB and Ericsson, and major embedded system vendors, for example Atmel Corporation.

RESEARCH

This study programme is hosted by the Mälardalen Real-Time Research Centre (MRTC), which has an internationally acknowledged record of excellence in conducting high-quality research in embedded system. We transfer the latest research results to our education. Most of the advanced-level courses cover state-of-the art research in embedded systems, and they are jointly taken with the PhD students of the department.

FUTURE AND CAREER

The market for intelligent embedded systems is enormous, and the industry’s demand for experts in this area is constantly increasing. Following this study programme will make you very competitive on the national and international job market, both in the industry as a highly-skilled expert.
