Educational Sciences and Mathematics

Educational Sciences and Mathematics is one out of six established research specialisations in the university research and education strategy. The research specialisation includes research environment Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and four research environments in educational sciences.

The established research specialisation Educational Sciences and Mathematics comprises five research environments. The four research environments within Educational Sciences constitute the basis for research in the prioritised area of education Teacher Education and Didactics as an area for third-cycle studies. The fifth environment, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, constitutes the basis for research in the subject at the first-, second-, and third-cycle levels.

Educational Sciences – four research environments and one area for third-cycle studies

The research within Educational Sciences is divided into four research environments: Children and young people in school and in society; Mathematics, natural science and engineering including subject didactics; Language and literary studies including subject didactics; Society, interculture, leadership and evaluation.

Researchers within the four environments have been successful in terms of receiving funding from VR, EU and other research sponsors such as regional cooperation partners. They contribute actively to national and international research through projects, networks and conferences.

Didactics as an area for third-cycle studies

Mälardalen University has degree-awarding powers for licentiate and doctorate degrees in the area of Didactics. The university uses the following definition of the area of Didactics:

Research within the area of Didactics, which is characterised by a cross- and multidisciplinary nature, deals with issues of education, teaching and learning particularly in relation to the spheres of primary school, school, adult education and teacher education and with the following focus:

  • The cross-section between a specific subject area in primary school, school, and adult education, its scientific basis, and the learning and teaching of this subject area
  • The different needs, experiences, and life conditions of children, young people, and adults as conditions for learning and development
  • Steering, leadership, the teaching profession and school development in primary school, school and adult education
  • Didactic research is characterised by a scientific and critical approach, through which different perspectives, theories and methodology efforts are applied and developed.

In the area of Didactics, there are two third-cycle education subjects at Mälardalen University: Didactics and the Didactics of Natural Science and Engineering.

Mathematics and Applied Mathematics as a research environment and one subject area for third-cycle studies 

Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is a strong research environment both nationally and internationally. Mälardalen University has degree-awarding powers for licentiate and doctorate degrees as well as master and bachelor degrees in the subject of Mathematics/Applied Mathematics. At the university, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics constitutes the research basis for all study programmes in the main subject of Mathematics/Applied Mathematics, especially in Engineering and Economy, as well as the research education in the subject. The environment contributes to all established research specialisations of the university through interdisciplinary cooperation and collaboration. This is true of research and third-cycle studies as well as first- and second-cycle studies.

The research environment Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is divided into four groups which do research and education in the area of Mathematics and its applications:

  • Stochastic processes, Statistics and Financial Engineering,
  • Engineering Mathematics,
  • Algebra and Analysis with applications,
  • Discrete Mathematics and the modeling of behaviour and culture

Researchers and research groups in the research environment Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (MTM) in the established research area Educational Science and Mathematics (UVM) have been successful in obtaining funding from the Swedish Research Council, EU, Sida, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and other research funders. Through the projects, networks and conferences the environment is actively participating in international and national research in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and in interdisciplinary applications of mathematical methods and models in other sciences and engineering. Broad international and national cooperation, interdisciplinary and external collaboration, active international publication of high quality research, effective high quality research education in the third-cycle (research) educaton subject of Mathematics/Applied Mathematics and responsibility as the research basis for all study programmes in the main subject area of Mathematics/Applied Mathematics, especially in Engineering and Economy, as well as in the research education in the subject are at the core of the strategy and activities of the research environment Mathematics and Applied Mathematics.
