Medical services

Health care in Sweden is provided by health care centres. There are special clinics for children and expecting mothers, as well as youth clinics that offer advice on a range of issues, including family planning.

If you become ill...

1. during regular “office hours” you should call the health care centre closest to your accommodation. Please note that all health care centres are connected to a telephone service in Swedish with indications on whom and how to contact; wait until the recording is over and your call will be redirected to a nurse who can help you.

2. late in the afternoon, night time or during the weekend; you should call 1177, the health care counselling number and follow the instructions for counselling in English.

3. if it is an emergency or a life threatening situation, dial 112, the SOS alarm number in Sweden.

In any given case, you should always contact any of the options mentioned above. Access to both health care centres and emergency wards in Sweden is restricted and based on appointment or reference from a nurse at the health care centres or SOS alarm services.

If you are an EU citizen, always bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to prove your eligibility to Swedish health care. If you come from a country outside the EU you must be prepared to pay full medical fees, at least 1500 SEK. This is NOT IN ANYWAY covered by the university.

Pharmacies

Strong medications such as antibiotics are only available on prescription and sold at pharmacies “apoteket”. Simple medications such as headache tablets can be bought either at a pharmacy or the supermarkets. Note that contraceptive pills are available on prescription only.
