The two cities of Eskilstuna and Västerås are beautifully situated on either side of Lake Mälaren, one of Sweden's largest inland lakes. The cities are large enough to provide a wide range of accommodation, cultural activities, entertainment and sporting facilities, but not so large that students fade into anonymity. As a result of the university's growth, students now make a colorful contribution to the urban scene.
Communications to Stockholm and Arlanda airport are excellent, it takes only one hour by train to central Stockholm.
Eskilstuna is a town of about 93,000 inhabitants, situated close to Lake Mälaren about 100 kilometres west of Stockholm. Eskilstuna is known as the “City of Smiths” as knives, locks, nails and other high quality ironware have been produced here since the 17th century. Today, Eskilstuna is also known for its zoo and many shopping opportunities.
Västerås is the sixth largest city in Sweden with a population of 134,000 people. It is situated on the north shore of Lake Mälaren and about 100 kilometres west of Stockholm. In Västerås you find everything you would expect in a major city, plus Västerås Archipelago, a spectacular place with over 300 islands. In the summer it is the perfect place for sunbathing, swimming, watersports and boat trips and in the winter, when the lake freezes over, skating and cross country skiing are popular activities.
