30 million kronor for research into innovation management and embedded systems
Yesterday Mälardalen University received the positive news that four new research projects have been granted close to 15 million kronor in funding from the Knowledge Foundation, the foundation for knowledge and competence development. The Knowledge Foundation awarded almost 60 million kronor for research with industry, and Mälardalen University received the largest share.

Research introduces new uses for impact force in process industry
Impact force, as seen in shock waves from explosions or impact source waves, can be used in process industry for measuring and joining surfaces of different materials. As a result of this, cost and energy consumption can be reduced. This is shown in Mohammad Tabatabaee Ghomi’s doctoral thesis that will be presented on December 16 at Mälardalen University.

Scandinavian Studies students practice Swedish culture at Mälardalen University
60 students are currently enrolled in Scandinavian Studies at Mälardalen University. They have come to Sweden in order to study the Swedish language and Swedish culture. Our Lucia Day celebrations are a good example: every year, the students rehearse Swedish Lucia songs and perform a highly appreciated Lucia procession for the staff at the School of Education, Culture and Communication. This year was no exception, and 17 Scandinavian Studies students from all over the world participated in the procession.

Retrofitted power plants is the way to go
By retrofitting conventional heat and power plants, bio-ethanol and pellet production can be integrated in the plant. This reduces production costs and greenhouse gas emissions, at the same time as it has short payback time. This is shown in Han Song’s licentiate thesis that will be presented on November 28 at Mälardalen University.

School research at MDH receives 13 million grant
What are the challenges that pre-school children encounter when they begin school and why does the first preparatory year in school turn into a stumbling block for children’s development rather than the bridge that it was intended to be? Researchers at MDH have received a grant from Vetenskapsrådet to investigate ways in which teachers can adapt the school environment to support children’s personal development.

Refurbishment of the Västerås campus soon to begin
The University will refurbish some of its premises in Västerås. Next week, work will start in the T-building (by the library), and some weeks later in the U- and R-buildings, too.

MDH doctoral student of industrial economics and organization received international award
Many companies have to invest in the business development of new technology in order to survive in the long run. At the same time, they have to continue selling their current technology in order to survive in the short run. There are plenty of companies that have failed to combine the two, but a few have succeeded. Joakim Netz, a doctoral student of industrial economics and organization at Mälardalen University, has won, together with Einar Iveroth from Uppsala University, an award for his paper presented at the European Academy of Management annual conference, where the two explain how Swedish corporations have dealt with this classic problem.

The Municipality and the University go in for a new campus in Eskilstuna
Eskilstuna Municipality and Mälardalen University both support a new location for the University’s activities. Today, an agreement of principle was signed about constructing a new campus in the city centre of Eskilstuna. - By gathering all our activities in one building, there will be more synergy between the different parts of the University, says Vice-Chancellor Karin Röding.

Mälardalen University efforts against cheating students
26 September, Högskoleverket [The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education] presented a report about the drastic increase of cheating at the nation’s universities last year. The report shows that Mälardalen University (MDH), together with Södertörn University, has the most cases of cheating in relation to the number of students. According to Högskoleverket, the reason for the increase is MDH’s improved work against cheating, not the fact that there are actually more students who cheat.

How did it go with the Swedish game management policy?
Terence Fell, lecturer in political science, has written a research article that will be published in next issue of Statsvetenskaplig tidskrift (a Swedish political science magazine). The article, entitled Explaining Policy Failure in Swedish Game Management: An Institutional Analysis, is an institutional analysis of the implementation of the Swedish game management policy over a 20-year period.

Mälardalen University is granted new degree-awarding powers and offers two new programmes
On 28 June the National Agency for Higher Education (HSV) decided to grant degree-awarding powers to Mälardalen University, for both the Special Education programme and the Special Needs Education programme. - The decision was very pleasing, though not unexpected, says Karin Röding, Vice-Chancellor of Mälardalen University. The University has both the experience and the prerequisites for these programmes and as soon as this autumn will be receiving the first 64 programme students.

Mälardalen University is granted degree-awarding powers for research programmes in Health and Social
The National Agency for Higher Education (HSV) has decided to grant Mälardalen University permission to award Licentiate and Doctoral degrees along with Master’s degrees within the area of Health and Social Welfare. The announcement came on 22 June and this means that Mälardalen University will now have degree-awarding powers for research programmes within the area of Health and Welfare, which is an important milestone in the University’s development.

Researchers to become entrepreneurs
Mälardalen University has received EU contributions worth almost three million Swedish kronor to develop long-term support structures for researchers wishing to start a company and turn their ideas into business opportunities. Apart from helping such researchers, this will be of benefit to the region. The project known as Affärsplan [‘Business Plan’] Västmanland is a joint venture with the Västmanland County Administrative Board, which owns the project.

Mälardalen University may award preschool teacher degrees
The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education decided today to grant Mälardalen University degree-awarding powers for preschool teacher education, which means that we can offer the programme as planned in the autumn.
