Logotype Mälardalen University

SFX - University Library link server

What does SFX do?

SFX provides direct links from a database citation to the full text of the article (if available) and other helpful options. Options will change from citation to citation. When available, SFX will link to one or more of the following:

  • full text of the article
  • an automatic search of BookIT, the Mälardalen University Library Catalog
  • a link to an interlibrary loan form

How do I access SFX?

The library holds subscriptions to various online databases. Some of these are SFX-enabled. When you find a citation in one of these databases, click on the SFX-button or text link.

This will open a window with a menu of options for accessing the full-text of the article and other choices.

Can I access SFX off campus ?

Students, faculty, and staff of MDH can access SFX from off campus. You may be asked for your password and University ID.

Why are there sometimes multiple links to full-text?

An article can be available through several full-text services.

Why don't I always get directly to the article?

Some full-text databases don't allow SFX to link directly to the article. Instead you'll either go to a page displaying all volumes of the journal, where you'll have to navigate to the volume and issue you need, or to the front page of the database, where you'll have to search for the journal you need.

Why is the full text not always available?

The full-text option appears only when the Library owns that item. We don't subscribe to all titles, and not all titles are available online.

Why do I fail to see the SFX menu in SFX-enabled resources?

Software such as Pop-up Zapper and Pop-up Stopper (both of which turn off pop-up ads) turns off SFX as well since SFX uses a pop-up window. If you have such software installed on your computer, you will need to turn it off in order to see the SFX menu.

Why don't I see any SFX Icons?

The most likely cause is that you have JavaScript disabled in your browser. If it's turned off, the SFX button won't appear. Re-enable JavaScript and everything should be fine.
