About me - Lene Martin
After college I completed the then novel education to Ophthalmic technician in Malmö and got my first position at the Eye Clinic, Sabbatsbergs Hospital, in Stockholm 1973. Diplomas in Orthoptics, Ophthalmic Nursing and Health Care Education were acquired 1976, 1985 and 1986, respectively. My doctorial studies started in the late 80- ties and I became PhD in Medical Science 1993.
The thesis delt with automatic interpretation of results from computerized visual field examination, one of the most common methods in ophthalmic care.
Since 2000 I have been associate professor in experimental ophthalmology at the department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, working with research and teaching until 2010. During the last years I also had a side position as director of health care at the St Eriks Eye Hospital. At the end of 2010 I took office as professor in Care Sciences at MDH.
My background in care sciences go way beyond the area of ophthalmic care, due to the fact that the programming method, used in my thesis, is relevant also in other medical domains. I initiated and managed a master program in health informatics for health care personnel with bachelor or higher degree, and developed several medical computer programs, e.g. for supporting management of patients glaucoma, with high blood pressure and for analyzing the pattern of hormones in saliva, which is related to both cardio-vascular disease and depression. At my research site you can find a link to an "expert sdystem" for managing red eyes.
Yet, until now my main research area has been visual disturbances, covering the entire age span, from problems occurring due to premature birth to the most common age-related eye diseases.
At the MDH I am looking forward to work with supervision of doctorial students, an activity which I have found to very rewarding indeed, and to pursue my interests for method development and knowledge distribution in health care.
